Americanism and The Ladies' Auxiliary of Walter Frasier American Legion Unit #108 in Oxford, Michigan
The American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary Unit 108 of Oxford personifies Department's ideals of "Americanism." We are blessed to share our Post with The American Legion, Sons of..., Amvets, VFW, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, soon to be Young Marines, and a full functioning American Revolution through Today Museum—all organizations with similar beliefs and guidelines. This grants us the luxury of taking on projects we enjoy and including a sense of 100% Americanism by reaching out to educate, help, and to try to inspire others to do the same.
Two examples of promoting patriotism, American ideals and the principles of democracy are 10-year-old Kasie Jeffery, Unit #108's, 18th District's and Department's Jr. Miss Poppy, who has shared Poppies, Poppy Puppies, Hugs and Speeches at over a dozen major events. Kasie's also written requests to President Obama and Governor Snyder to give speeches on "Americanism” and has written an article on the same for our local paper. And Patricia Pitt, who has researched & presented the history of the Pledge of Allegiance and "The meaning and proper way to treat every item on the MIA/POW table". Pat also has the distinction of being the only Auxiliary member and woman to be The MIA/POW Table Chairman.
Other examples are the bi-annual packing parties for soldiers deployed overseas to let them know we are thinking about them and we are proud of what they are doing. The donation of a replacement laptop to help keep a Unit of deployed servicemen in touch, and the helping of those waiting at home. Honoring those who are also helping others: Department Commander Carnie D. Jackson Testimonial Dinner.
Promoting Americanism projects have involved activities within the community such as Strawberry Festival, both Oxford and Lakeville Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremonies, Seymour Lake Park's Celebrate Oxford, and the Christmas Parade. These include a mixture of Displaying of Colors, Uniforms, Unity, Tradition in Ceremony, honoring and remembering those who sacrificed, inspiration and the communities' access to us and our programs. The Christmas Parade is followed by a children's party and a seniors' party the next day.
We work arm-in-arm with homeless vets and groups of caring people to feed, house and help homeless vets in projects such as Piquette Square Project, Detroit VA Hospital, Ann Arbor VA Hospital Clothes Closet, and Michigan Veterans' Foundation.
Our Educational endeavors included Kathy Hubbard's reading "Patriotism in a Nutshell" and "America The Beautiful" to elementary students, followed with discussion and song. Girl State/Boy State, the teaching of "The Thirteen Folds of The Flag" to the North Oakland County Troop Leaders and Girl Scouts. Education through remembering and respect: Wreaths Across America, Post Everlasting Memorial Ceremony, Poppy Walk-throughs, Screaming Eagles Dinner, Delbert Waugh Helicopter Dedication.
